At the Public Library for Union County. The talk and native plant orders will begin at 1:30 p.m. The talk is entitled Landscaping with Native Plants for Birds, Butterflies and the Bay, presented by Catherine Haffner, watershed specialist, Columbia County Conservation District.

Descriptions of the trees and plants available through this annual Conservancy fundraiser are below:

TREES AND SHRUBS

1) Allegheny Serviceberry (Amelanchier laevis) A small, deciduous, multi trunked tree which feathers showy 5 petaled white flowers in drooping clusters. Full sun to part shade. Bloom time: April.

2) Sweet Pepperbush (Clethra alnifolia) A slender slowly growing deciduous shrub reaching 5 8' tall, featuring fluffy bottle brush like fragrant white flowers. Full sun to part shade and moist to wet soils. Bloom time: July to August.

3) Grey Dogwood (Cornus racemosa) Deciduous shrub growing 10-15’ tall and featuring white flowers on red terminal stems.  Whitish clusters of berries in the fall.  Full sun to partial shade.

4) American Hazelnut (Corylus americana) An easily grown shrub tolerating average moisture and full sun to partial shade. In fall produces edible nuts and has good color.

5) Winterberry (Ilex verticillata) A slow growing, deciduous holly shrub which typically grows 3 to 12' tall. Full sun to part shade and wet to medium we soil. Bloom time: Greenish white flowers in June July and bright red berries in late summer to fall.

6) Spicebush (Lindera benzoin) – A deciduous shrub with a broad, rounded habit which typically grows 6-12’ tall.  Full sun to part shade.  Greenish-yellow flowers in early spring and spicy scented leaves.

Virginia Bluebells (Mertensia virginica )

FERNS AND PERENNIALS

1) Eastern Woodfern (Dryopteris marginalis) A robust fern which can be grown in average well-drained soil and partial shade to full shade. Fronds spray out from a compact clump.

2) Cinnamon Fern (Osmunda cinammomea) A larger clumping fern which can be grown in partial shade to full shade. Prefers a moist, acidic soil.

3) Butterflyweed (Asclepias tuberosa)  Clusters of small nectar-filled orange flowers.  Enjoys full sun and dry soil.  Blooms May to September.

4) Blue Star (Amsonia tabernaemontana 'Blue Ice')  Easily grown in average well-drained soil in full sun or partial shade Compact, 15" height with lavender blue flowers beginning in May.

5) Heath Aster (Aster ericoides 'Snow Flurry')  A compact mounding plant (1') which tolerates drought and clay soils. Produces a profusion of small white daisy-like flowers in August through October. Full sun.

6) Virginia Bluebells (Mertensia virginica)  A long-lived and slowly-spreading plant forming beautiful clumps of blue pink flowers.  Does best in partial sun to shade and medium to moist soil.

7) Yellow Wild Indigo (Baptisia sphaerocarpa 'Screaming Yellow')   Attractive yellow blooms in May - June on 2-3' plants. Full sun to partial shade and dry to medium soils.

8) Coneflower (Echinacea purpurea 'Harvest Moon') An orange/salmon-colored echinacea which is drought tolerant. Prefers full sun to partial shade.

9) Blue Flag Iris (Iris versicolor) Large, light to deep blue flower with yellow central markings. Waterside to shallow water; partially sunny habitat. Bloom time: May to July.

10) Cardinal Flower (Lobelia cardinalis) Similar to giant blue lobelia except with scarlet flowers blooming July to September. Prefers full sun to partial shade and a medium to moist area.

11) Giant Blue Lobelia (Lobelia siphilitica) Blooms July through September on plants 2-3' in height, Tolerates full sun to partial shade and medium to moist soils.

12) Garden Phlox (Phlox paniculata 'Katerine') A beautiful flowering plant in midsummer growing to 3' and requiring full sun to partial shade and moderate moisture.

13) Obedient Plant (Physostegia virginiana 'Miss Manners') 2' spikes of white snapdragon-like flowers midsummer to fall. Grows in full sun to partial shade and moderate moisture.

14) Fire Pink (Silene virginica) A drought-tolerant plant blooming in early summer with scarlet flowers. Plant height about 1'.

15) Indian Pink (Spigelia marilandica) Easily grown in average, medium, well-drained soil in part shade to full shade A clump-forming perennial blooming in June with unique red and yellow tubular flowers on 18" stiff stems.

16) Spiderwort (Tradescantia virginiana 'Red Grape') Grows in partial shade to full shade and blooms May to July. Medium moisture. 2' height.

17) Culver's Root (Veronicastrum virginicum) A handsome tall plant (4-5') with spikes of white flowers blooming much of the summer. Prefers full sun to partial shade and moist to average soil.
